I've been a Guy Van Duser fan since his first album. Guy's playing is always flawless, his arrangements always clever and entertaining. And although Guy will readily list the artists who have influenced himChet Atkins, George Van Eps, Charlie Byrd, Jerry Reed, Les Paulhis sound is truly unique. I'm a proud owner of every one of Guy's recordings, but this new CD may be my favorite. Every track on this CD was recorded live in concert! Guy and producer Gary Mandell were kind enough to include all of his introductory comments, ad libs, and anecdotes, so the CD really captures the concert experience. (Hearing Guy's relaxed interplay with the audience should be required listening for any solo performer.) And, as always, his playing is incredible! Duke Ellington's Rockin' in Rhythm starts off the CDand you won't believe your ears! Then check out Guy's beautiful Eddie Heywood medley of Canadian Sunset and Soft Summer Breeze, released here for the first time. Guy never plays a tune quite the same way twice. If you own some of his earlier CDs, you'll enjoy his fresh improvisations on Black Beauty, Old-Fashioned Love, Avalon, and Snowy Morning Blues. Guy's Great Western TV Medley is one of his most popular showpieces. (Maverick, Rawhide, The Rifleman, Paladin, Sugarfoot, Wagon Train, and Wyatt Earp) For this live version, Guy plays 'Name That Tune' with his audience. If the wrong tune is named, Guy responds with "No, here's how that one goes..." and effortlessly plays a quote of the new tune on the fly. It's all in good fun, and the game adds excerpts of Bat Masterson and Cheyenne to the medley. The Stars and Stripes Forever, Guy's most famous arrangement, closes the CD. This virtuoso piece established Guy's standing in the fingerstyle community, and caught the attention of Chet Atkins, who later recorded Guy's transcription. It's an appropriate finale to a great solo guitar concert. Our very highest recommendation! |

Guy's back with yet another great live album, this time with his longtime musical partner Billy Novick. Recording together since 1976, this new CD documents their milestone 30th Anniversary Concert in Washington DC, January 2006. Billy is a world class clarinet player, who has toured with David Bromberg, Leon Redbone, and Martha & the Vandellas. He can be heard in dozens of TV & movie soundtracks, including Lone Star, Wild Hearts Can't Be Broken, The Opposite of Sex, and Seabiscuit. Guy and Billy also teamed up on the theme songs of the popular PBS shows Antiques Roadshow and This Old House. The world's finest 2-man "Big Band," you'll be blown away by this CD. Billy's improvisations are unbeatablemelodic, elegant, and joyful. As for Guy, just re-read my Live At Boulevard Music review above. You know I think he's simply the best! There's just no other player who can do what he cansimultaneous bass, chords, melody, and improvwith as much style and taste! Recorded live at Washington DC's John E. Marlow Guitar Series, it's no surprise that each & every CD track features an extended, knockout fingerstyle guitar solo. In fact, this CD marks the premiere of Guy's incredible solo guitar treatment of the full verse and chorus of Stardust! To my ears, this track along is worth the cost of the CD. Also introduced here are virtuoso arrangements of Fats Waller's S'posin, WC Handy's St. Louis Blues, and Joplin's Easy Winners, plus fresh, new takes on some favorites from earlier CDs. Once Again - Our very highest recommendation! |

This is Guy's tribute to his guitar hero and good friend Chet Atkins. This CD, and Volume 2 below, are drawn from a series of recordings Guy made over the years to amuse Chet Atkins. Guy would arrange a tune that he was sure Chet had never recorded. He'd imitate Chet as closely as possible, then send the tape to Chet asking, "do you remember recording this?" Van Duser fans won't recognize Guybut that's exactly the point. His goal here was to sound like Chet Atkins' LPs from the '60s and '70sand he does it perfectly! Instead of his usual solo nylon string guitar, Guy is playing a Gretsch electric over bass and drum tracks. Another surprise is Guy's incredible single note leads. Somewhere, Mr. Atkins must be smiling. Note: This is now a Collector's Item. Guy has stopped production on these CDs for now, and we only have two copies left. However, we are offering a discount to returning GFmusic customers only. |
