The original series of 24 medals was minted exclusively
for the men and women in the aerospace industry and also established
Franklin Mint collectors.
The face of each medal bears a sculptured design
portraying one of the key events in the history of America in
space.
A distinguished board of advisers, who made space
history, chose the subjects to be honored.
The reverse briefly relates the history of the
event portrayed.
In 1973, and again in 1976, additional medals
(12 and 24 respectively) were made available to collectors of
the first 24 medals.
In 1977, a mini-coin collection containing the
60 designes previously minted was made available.
Each mini-coin collection included a hardwood
collector's case fitted with a transparent top. Each set of 12
medals contains 9.7 ounces.
