Silver Flatware

River City Coins & Jewelry LLC BBB Business Review

Antique Sterling & Coin Silver Flatware

Sterling silver flatware was first developed in the 1400's in England. Formal dining evolved into a high art by the 17th century. Royalty used full sets of flatware in the 1600's and European aristocrats quickly followed suit. In Britain during the Victorian period more silverware was manufactured than ever before or since. In the 19th century The British Empire was at its hight and at that time the middle classes first reveled in their new-found wealth. Hosts and hostesses entertained with elaborate sets of fine sterling discretely making a statement regarding their wealth and social postition. American manufacturers were quick to recognize the positive trend and flatware manufacturing then soared in the mid-1800's when vast silver reserves were dicovered in the Nevada mines. It takes more than 30 steps to turn pure silver into a sterling silver dining utensil from the mine to the table.

Replacements for International Silver Company

The International Silver Company was formed in 1898 by 14 various independent New England silversmiths that joined themselves together to form a company that became the world's largest manufacturer of silverware. The International Silver Co. was organized with an authorized capital of 20,000,000. International Silver Company and its factories were active in the whole Meriden-Wallingford area becoming possibly the larger center for silver craftsmanship in the U.S. Peak of production was reched in the late 1930's. Sterling hollowware production was continued until 1976 while the silver plated hollowware business was sold to Oneida Silversmiths in 1981. The International Silver Company was sold in 1984 to Katy Industries Inc. changing its name to Wallace International Silversmiths, Wallingford, Connecticut.

Silver Iris Design Style Set

Here is a most unusual sterling design. So exquisite in the detail -- so deep and clear -- it has all the beauty of hand-wrought silver.

When you hold a peice of Silver Iris in your hand you can see and feel the luxurious weight. Three piercings round out the full Iris flowers not only on the face, but on the back and sides as well. Even to one who knows little about such things, it is clear that no ordinary silversmithing could produce Silver Iris. Such a pattern obviously requires extra-ordinary skill and meticulous care in designing and finishing.

Imagine Silver Iris on your table. Nothing can match the thrill of pride and pleasure that comes from owning solid silver... knowing that its beauty, and your love for it, will grow with each passing year.

Replacements for Gorham Manufacturing Company

The Gorham Manufacturing Company is one of the largest American manufacturers of sterling and silverplate and a foundry for bronze sculpture.

Gorham Silver was founded in Providence, Rhode Island, in 1831 by Jabez Gorham, a master craftsman, in partnership with Henry L. Webster. Coin Silver spoons were the firm's Chief product. The company also made combs, thimbles, jewelry, and other small items. Congress enacted a tariff which effectively blocked the importation of silverware from outisde the United States in 1842, which helped the American silver industry. Jabez Gorham did not take full advantage of this opportunity, but in 1847 Jabez retired and his son, John Gorham succeeded him as head of the company. John Gorham introduced mechanized production methods, enlarged the premises in downtown Providence, improved the designs, and expanded the product line. During the heyday of American silver manufacturing, approximately 1850-1940, Gorham was highly influential. William C. Codman, one of Gorham's most noted designers, created the Chantilly design in 1895, has become the most famous of Gorham's flatware patterns. The White House has used Gorham silver services during many administrations. Mrs. Ulysses S. Grant asked Gorham to commemorate the country's one-hundredth anniversary. The George W. Bush family chose Gorham's Chantilly as the flatware service on Air Force One.
