The Mint Sets produced from
1947 through 1958 were double mint sets. They included two examples
of each coin struck for circulation from the Philadelphia, Denver
and San Francisco Mints. San Francisco minted coins only through
1955 for circulation so Mint Sets produced after 1955 will not
include "S" Mint coins.
The coins were packaged in cardboard
with a fold over paper cover of either pink, green, or brown
which often results in corresponding similar toning on the silver
coins in the sets. These double sets from each mint were then
inserted in a yellow envelope. This packaging proved to be very
flimsy and sets in original packaging are not very common. Also,
the mint set coins were normally of better strike, with hardly
any contact marks and many of these early sets have been "cherry
picked" or had the nicer coins removed.
River City Coins has a limited
number of nice original mint sets in stock, all purchased from
the same source whose mother purchased them directly from the
Mint in the year of issue. Unfortunately, she has written the
date and a brief description on the exterior envelopes so they
are not totally "original". As is common with coins
packaged in this manner, they are all toned in one way or another.
We guarantee that these are all
original and not "put together" sets.
